[ARCHIVED] College Student Voting Information

COLLEGE STUDENTS WHO WANT TO VOTE

A student away at college needs to decide where they live.  Either maintain residency at their parent’s home or establish new residency in their college community.

If they are not already registered, the student will then register in that chosen municipality.  Students can register on-line at myvote.wi.gov (until Wednesday, October 16th) or in their local municipal Clerk’s office (up until Friday, November 1st).  Students can request their absentee ballot using the https://myvote.wi.gov website as well.  If you vote absentee, read the instructions carefully before turning in your absentee ballot.

If you have questions about registering or requesting an absentee ballot, please contact your municipal Clerk.  Advice from others is not always accurate and can lead to critical mistakes.

Important Reminder to Students: Please fill out the forms for registration and absentee ballots yourself.  Your parents should not fill out forms for you unless you require assistance as defined by the Wisconsin Election Commission.  Have your Wisconsin Driver’s License or Photo ID available when registering or requesting an absentee ballot.

Important Reminder to Parents:  Please talk to your college student about the rules for voting.  Voting an absentee ballot at home and then going to the polls at school for the same election date is a felony, even if the ballot contents are different.  Don’t assume your college student knows.  Casting more than one ballot per election is a felony.

VOTER REGISTRATION DRIVES

We’ve seen an increase in voter registration drives this election.  The documents appear to be coming from the City as they often include the name and address of the City Clerk.  Please note the fine print as these organizations are NOT affiliated with the City of Pewaukee.  While most organizations are legitimate, this is an opportunity for scammers.  Remember that voter registration requires personal information such as your birth date and driver’s license number.  Never give personal information to anyone you don’t know.
