Keep Fire Hydrants Clear of Snow

Community News Posted on November 25, 2025

Please keep fire hydrants clear of snow this winterWinter Safety Notice: Please Clear Snow Off and Around Hydrants

As winter weather approaches, the Department of Public Works is reminding residents to help keep their neighborhoods safe by ensuring that nearby fire hydrants remain visible and accessible after each snowfall. Snow-covered hydrants can significantly delay firefighters during an emergency. When crews must search for and dig out a buried hydrant, critical minutes can be lost—time that may be essential in protecting lives and property.

Residents and business owners are encouraged to take the following steps throughout the winter season:

  • Know where the nearest fire hydrants are located.
  • Shovel out hydrants after every snowfall.
  • Clear at least a 3-foot radius around each hydrant to give firefighters the space they need to work quickly and safely.

With snowfall expected soon, residents are urged to take responsibility for hydrants near their homes to help ensure faster response times for emergency crews. Community participation plays a vital role in emergency preparedness and taking just a few minutes to clear a hydrant can make all the difference during a fire.
